An Ascension Place Story

Tessa grew up on the South side of Chicago where, at age 13, her aunt introduced her to heroin and crack. She spent her next 27 years chasing her next high, losing her children to the County, doing sex work, and being repeatedly abused and assaulted. Finally, she decided she wanted a change. She moved to Minneapolis, enrolled at a methadone clinic and moved into Ascension Place. Six months later, Tessa had built a strong relationship with her Ascension Place Case Manager and was regularly attending Ascension Place’s Chemical Health Support Group and a Relapse Prevention group for ex-heroin addicts. At age 40, after living a year at Ascension Place, Tessa moved into her very first apartment.

A Next Step Story

Rachel has lived at Ascension Place for 2 years. Before coming to Ascension Place, she had been evicted from her public housing apartment due to her husband’s illegal activities. For years after that, she lived on the streets suffering from debilitating stress and reliving the abuses and neglect of her childhood. At Ascension Place, Rachel really worked hard on becoming stable. She attended our Mental Health Support Group, started working on her bachelor’s degree and balanced two different volunteer positions. More importantly, Rachel found friends, peace, and purpose. Now living at Next Step Housing, Rachel's goals are to volunteer, finish school and continue rebuilding her relationship with her daughter.
